Carl Milton Levin was an American attorney and politician who served as a United States senator from Michigan from 1979 to 2015. A member of the Democratic Party, he was the chair of the Senate Armed Services Committee from 2001 to 2003 and again from 2007 to 2015. The Democrat was 87 and died on Thursday 29 July 2021. Sen. Lewin was a Harvard-educated civil rights attorney and former taxi driver, who for decades carried his faded 1953 auto union membership card in his wallet.

Carl Levin was survived by his wife, Barbara, and three adult daughters, Kate, Laura, and Erica.

Cause of death

His family and the Levin Center at Wayne State University’s law school did not release a cause of death in an evening statement. He had been living with lung cancer since age 83.
