David Norman Dinkins was an American politician, lawyer, and author who served as the 106th Mayor of New York City from 1990 to 1993, becoming the first African American to hold the office. After winning the 1989 election, barber’s son David Dinkins became New York City’s first Black mayor.

Dinkins was survived by His wife Joyce Dinkins and Children, David Dinkins Jr., Donna Dinkins.

Cause of death

Two senior NYPD officials confirmed to NBC New York that Dinkins’ health aide found him unresponsive in his Lenox Hill apartment Monday night, having apparently died of natural causes. The former mayor died a little more than a month after his wife, Joyce Dinkins, passed away.
